How a chatbot can help co-parents better communicate

Most people are still discovering how artificial intelligence (AI) can help them in their daily lives. It can even help separated and divorced parents better communicate about their children and other matters.

Newly separated and divorced parents (and even those who have been apart for some time) can find it challenging to have even the simplest communications without intentionally or unintentionally saying something that angers or upsets the other. That’s where a chatbot can help.

ChatGPT, Copilot or another chatbot can help parents keep their emotions and negative feelings out of communications, even if one parent is being accusatory or nasty. Chatbots can also make communications short and clear.

A chatbot response typically shouldn’t be used word-for-word. It’s important for written communications to sound like they are the parent’s own words. However, a chatbot response can be a good starting point, whether for an email or text message or a phone or even face-to-face conversation.

Chatbots can also help parents prepare for important and/or potentially difficult conversations with their co-parent, children or even other family members around the divorce. Even the difficult conversations of telling children about an impending separation and the results of the divorce agreement that affect them can be aided by getting chatbot input.

Some precautions to keep in mind

It’s wise to keep the information you enter into a chatbot free of specific names (at least full names), case numbers and detailed personal information. While not likely, there’s a potential that they could pop up in other people’s chatbot responses.

While chatbots can be useful in the ways discussed here, it’s important for parents not to use them for obtaining legal information – certainly not to pass on to a co-parent. It may or may not be accurate or apply to the situation at hand. That’s one reason that having experienced legal guidance is critical.
