Many new expenses result from a divorce in Florida. You may have to move to a new residence and you may have to buy replacement items you previously owned when you were married. One item you may have to buy after your divorce is health insurance.

A study from The University of Michigan found approximately 115,000 women lose their health insurance per year because of divorce. The study looked at women age 26-64 during the years 1996 to 2007 in the United States.

The study suggests the loss of health insurance can last well beyond the period after the divorce is final. The percentage of women with insurance coverage after a divorce stayed lower for more than two years.

The report found 25 percent of women who have coverage as a dependent on their husband’s health insurance end up uninsured within six-months of the divorce.

“Given that approximately one million divorces occur each year in the U.S., and that many women get health coverage through their husbands, the impact is quite substantial,” said Bridget Lavelle, said lead author of the study.

Financial problems after a divorce resulted in some women losing health insurance coverage from their own employer’s plans, as they could no longer afford their share of the premium.

We all know health insurance is expensive. You need to discuss this expense with your attorney and develop a plan to ensure you do not join the hundred thousand women every year who lose coverage after a divorce.
