3 things to consider when planning a vacation after divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 22, 2025 | Child Custody And Parenting Plans |

The summer is often a time when parents enjoy taking their children on vacation. These trips are often a time to connect and experience new things. If you’re in the process of divorce or already have a custody plan in place, you have a few things to think about that some others don’t.

For example, you’ll have to notify the other parent about the vacation. These three tips may be beneficial as you embark on the vacation planning process.

Choose the destination carefully

Before you finalize the destination for your post-divorce vacation, review the terms of your parenting plan to determine if there are any restrictions. Some parenting plans limit parents to a specific geographical area with their children unless they obtain permission from the court or the other parent to travel outside of that area.

Ensure you leave time for traveling

As you’re planning the vacation, be sure that you leave ample time for traveling to the destination. Trying to cut the travel too close to when you have to arrive at the destination or have your child back to their other parent can be stressful. Remember to factor in time to get through security if you’re planning on flying.

Make amazing memories

The focus of your vacation should be on making memories with your children. Even though it’s tempting to try to fill every waking moment with something to do, remember that vacation should also be a time to rest. Consider your children’s ages and desires to ensure you’re planning things they’ll enjoy without creating an overwhelming schedule.
