You probably know that driving is a privilege that can be withdrawn if you abuse it. In fact, thousands of Floridians get their driver’s licenses suspended for all manner of reasons each year. While some reasons for license suspension may be obvious, there are instances when you might not even know that your license has been suspended.

Of course, having your driver’s license suspended is never ideal, especially if you rely on your car to get to work or if you make a living from driving. That said, here are three reasons why your driver’s license may be suspended in Florida:

When you are convicted of drunk driving

If you are convicted of drunk driving, your driver’s license will be suspended for between six and 24 months depending on the severity of the offense. If you are a repeat offender, then your driver’s license may be revoked altogether.

When you skip a court appearance

Missing a date with the court is another reason why your driver’s license may be suspended. And the appearance in question does not have to be traffic-related. Additionally, keep in mind that failing to pay fines or traffic tickets can also result in the suspension of your driver’s license. Be sure to stay up to date with any fines and tickets you might have.

When you accumulate too many points on your driving record

Most traffic offenses attach “points” to your license, and too many points will result in a suspended license. An offense like passing a school bus, speeding or operating a cellphone while driving will definitely earn you points.

Driving is an integral part of everyday life. Find out how you can safeguard your rights if you are facing a possible suspension of your driver’s license in the Sunshine state.
