Older adults, divorce and health

There are many health implications to getting a divorce. Florida residents who are at least 50 years old and have gone through a divorce may suffer from both psychological and physical issues.

Elevated symptoms of depression are closely associated with gray divorce. Gray divorcees may also develop chronic anxiety and stress. Post-traumatic stress disorders may also be a consequence of gray divorce with older individuals suffering from memories of unhappy events and nightmares, particularly if they were victims in abusive relationships.

Seniors with psychological conditions may also be prone to physical issues. If they have chronic stress that has not been treated, they may have a higher risk of developing obesity, insomnia, high blood pressure, weakened immunity and heart disease. Medical conditions closely associated with depression include type 2 diabetes, heart disease and Parkinson's disease. Older adults who are already suffering from existing health issues may find that the symptoms they exhibit may be exacerbated. The various symptoms of psychological distress, which include impaired memory, changes in appetite, mood swings, fatigue, lack of focus, changes in sleep, hopelessness and muscle aches, can also impair the health of older divorcees, especially if there are multiple symptoms present.

Individuals who are depressed may stop engaging in physical activity and become more sedentary. If they are suffering from high blood pressure or some form of diabetes, those conditions can worsen with the lack of movement and cause additional health complications.

Insomnia can cause temporary changes in individuals' cognitive abilities. It can make them forget to go shopping for food or take their medication.

Older divorcing adults may consult a family law attorney regarding how best to obtain favorable terms regarding divorce issues. A lawyer may assist with out-of-state divorces and resolving disputes pertaining to alimony and the division of assets.
