Florida residents who are thinking about marriage may be interested to learn that, according to a recent study, women who have sudden career surges after initially earning less than their husbands are more likely to get divorced. Part of the reason for this may be due to traditional gender roles.

One attorney noted that, based on experience with a number of clients, husbands often were not willing to step in to help with household chores and taking care of the children as their spouses started spending more time out of the house at work. Under traditional views of gender roles in the home, men often consider their careers to be more important as they are viewed as the one who financially supports the family, especially when the kids are very young. When their partners do start making more, some respond by trying to be more controlling or demanding. Others begin to work less but may not help out with the household duties.

There are some ways couples can mitigate the risks of a potential future divorce resulting from arguments regarding gender roles. For example, establishing equality early in the relationship can help. Discussing the household’s needs as they occur can also help, especially if the roles are shifting due to a career surge or change.

People and family situations change over time. As such, there are instances when two spouses find that they can no longer work together or are not getting what they need out of the marriage. A family law attorney may assist with understanding the divorce process, even if the former couple is looking at a military divorce or other special circumstance. If the former couple cannot reach an agreement regarding the division of their marital property, the attorney may litigate.
